The opportunity
The Director, Investment Stewardship will contribute to the Plan’s global corporate governance and stewardship activities and sustainable investing initiatives. As a member of the Corporate Governance & Stewardship Team, the Director will oversee the development, implementation and enhancement of corporate governance policies, proxy voting guidelines and public market engagement programs at OTPP, balancing leading governance and stewardship practices with a strategic, innovative mindset.
Who you'll work with
The Director works collaboratively across the Sustainable Investing Team in the identification, assessment, and management of material ESG factors within the OTPP portfolio. As a member of the Sustainable Investing Senior Leadership Team, the Director will supervise the Corporate Governance & Stewardship team.
What you'll do
Supports the SMD, Sustainable Investing in developing and implementing the strategy and business planning for the Corporate Governance & Stewardship team.
Maintain a deep fundamental understanding of corporate governance and stewardship across markets and the instruments and strategies used by portfolio managers across OTPP’s asset classes.
Stays abreast of the external developments, leading research, and best practices in corporate governance and stewardship across markets and regions globally by leveraging relationships with external governance organizations.
Understand and promote best practices in corporate governance and stewardship within the team and the broader organization.
Oversees the development and implementation of corporate governance and stewardship policies and proxy voting guidelines, balancing leading governance practices with our global mindset while remaining consistent with pragmatic and balanced approach Teachers’ is known for.
Collaborates with the Sustainable Investing and Equities teams on the development and execution of the Corporate Engagement Plan.
Build and maintain strong trust relationships with senior industry and investment peers and represent OTPP on external committees or initiatives as appropriate and in a manner that strengthens its profile. Share relevant insights with internal stakeholders.
Oversees talent development and management within the Corporate Governance & Stewardship team, as well as the broader Sustainable Investing and SSR division, including succession planning, coaching and mentorship for all areas of development including technical, relationship, and leadership skills.
Supports SSR’s key internal relationships with the C Suite and Board, Investment Division, and functional partners (eg. Finance, EOD, Global Development, Corporate Affairs, etc.).
What you'll need
Minimum of 8 years of experience related to corporate governance and stewardship, including company engagement, proxy voting, and policy development and implementation, preferably in an investment organization.
Deep knowledge of global corporate governance and stewardship practices, with good judgment in identifying and applying leading practices.
A track record of building long-term stakeholder relationships while addressing sustainability challenges in public markets and advancing stewardship priorities.
A thought leader on corporate governance and stewardship and assessment of governance risk through a total fund lens.
Superior communication and influencing capabilities, with an ability to convey complex decision-critical information and well-reasoned positions to varied audiences.
An inquiring yet pragmatic problem solver who will identify new ideas and solutions, then carefully test the translation from theory to practice.
Able to quickly grasp new concepts and adapt in a high-performing culture, under pressure and with time sensitive deadlines.
Able to manage challenging situations with sensitivity and humility.
A thoughtful relationship-builder who will balance productive working relationships with objective risk oversight.
