In this role as Director, Office of the Monitor, you will act in a supporting role to the Group Head and assist in providing strategic direction, leadership and oversight for all activities and dealings with Scotiabank’s Independent Compliance Monitor (ICM). You will partner closely with all stakeholders across all three lines of defense, particularly in Global Banking and Markets and Global Compliance, to ensure the Bank meets both its obligations and the Monitors expectations on a proactive basis. You will ensure that the Bank maintains transparent, positive and open relationships with the monitor and their team.

 

 

 

Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

 

 

 

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Provides support to the Head of the Office of the Monitor in leading and managing Scotiabank’s relationship with the Independent Compliance Monitor (ICM), providing content for regular updates and reporting to key stakeholders and senior management committees.
  • Coordinate and administer  interactions required by the monitor and their team, with applicable BNS employees as the ICM may request;
  • Providing guidance to Bank personnel in connection with the Monitor team requests;
  • Attending and monitoring  related meetings;
  • Ensuring key communications to the Monitor is responsive and complete;
  • Oversee the tracking of all Monitor requests and coordinating with business stakeholders to meet required deliverable deadlines; ensuring that  submissions maintain a consistent message and tone;
  • Advising key stakeholders on the drafting of presentations and responses  ; and
  • Supports oversight of  remediation activities, including:
    • Tracking all issues in coordination with the Regulatory Initiatives Group ( RIG)
    • Advising business lines on remediation activities to ensure consistency with Monitor expectations;
    • In coordination with RIG informing senior management on progress toward closure of findings and any associated delays; and
    • Ensuring that communication regarding remediation of suggested enhancements is clearly articulated and transparent to the Monitor
  • Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits.

  • Bachelor’s degree. JD/MBA a plus.
  • 7+ years of experience at a regulatory agency or in a similar position in the financial services industry or regulatory affairs background.
  • An in-depth understanding of financial markets, products, risk management and control functions.
  • Strong written and oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong planning and organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with senior Bank personnel.
  • Sound judgment in identifying risks in order to proactively escalate with relevant senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at a strategic level.
  • Professionalism, sensitivity, and discretion required.
  • Ability to solve problems, multi-task and manage changing priorities.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Collaborative team player.
  • Experience developing and managing teams and mentoring junior staff.
