The Director, Medical Affairs Gastroenterology is responsible for medical and scientific leadership within the Gastroenterology  therapeutic area.  This role is responsible and accountable for providing high level, evidenced-based, scientific expertise to internal and external partners.  The individual who assumes this role will also be responsible for leading the Integrated Evidence Generation Process (IEGP) in direct communication with the global team and in collaboration with the local cross functional business partners. In addition, providing scientific support for evidence generating activities including local Phase IV clinical studies and Investigator Initiated Studies.  This individual will also direct and manage a group of therapeutic MSLs in the development and execution of their functions-- Guiding the MSL Team on areas of interest to Janssen to develop and implement field-based activities aligned with the Medical Affairs Plan.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develops differentiation platforms around key clinical and other health outcomes attributes.
  • Identifies data gaps for each product within the respective disorders areas and develops a Data Generation Plan. Presents data gaps to Global team and actively participates in the research approval process, ReCAP.
  • Participates and represents Canada on the global Med Affairs Team (GMAT).
  • Liaise with multiple global partners to provide expertise and to ensure Canadian needs are met.
  • Participates and represents Medical Affairs on the internal Leadership Teams (segmented by Therapeutic area).
  • Key Partner in company sponsored studies-develops strategy, protocol and hypotheses for phase 4 clinical trials, aids in the identification of sites. 
  • Investigator Initiated Studies (provide key central management, such as operational, clinical drug supply, administration, ad-hoc/post-hoc analyses, and Risk Management Programs (RMPs).
  • Secures required resources to execute the Medical Affairs Plan and manages the resources appropriately. 
  • Leads exploratory analyses and communication of results to internal and external customers, including Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and congresses.
  • Accountable to own publication strategy, planning and execution.
  • Maintain up-to-date scientific expertise with regular attendance at key scientific/clinical/economic conferences, training sessions and preceptorships.
  • Develop, conduct and manage clinical protocols of high scientific standard in support of local initiatives.
  • Champion Investigator Initiated Studies to meet Canadian needs & oversight of final deliverables.
  • Identify the opportunity to gather relevant information via Scientific Advisory Boards, including development of an agenda, identifying attendees, overseeing the conduct of Ad Boards.
  • Participate along with key internal partners to identify and maintain relationships with KOLs.  Director will partner with the KOL including pipeline presentations, study concept development, global strategic issues, therapeutic area engagement and exploration.
  • Lead, develop and coach the MSL field team which includes the Field Manager(s).


  • Post-graduate scientific degree (Pharm.D., M. Sc. or Ph.D) or medical degree (M.D.

  • 3 years to 5 years of relevant experience in multi-national pharmaceutical industry in a medical or clinical function.

  • Strong background in clinical research with complementing experience in sales/marketing,   International exposure being an asset.

  • Proven track record developing, presenting and publishing clinical studies.

  • Strength in communicating effectively (oral and written) with both scientific and lay audiences.

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work with and motivate  teams are important qualities.

  • Therapeutic experience in GI is highly desirable.

  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
