General Accountability
Provides engineering expertise in the assessment of the condition of the surface track network, and develops solutions to ensure safe, reliable and efficient track systems that are in compliance with established maintenance standards. Performs design reviews of existing track components and systems. Develops technical specifications for track components, system and track related construction projects, conducts condition surveys, diagnoses site conditions and provides root cause assessments.
Key Job Functions
- Provide expertise in assessing the condition of the surface track network and recommends appropriate corrective action.
- Develop solutions to ensure a safe, reliable and efficient track system is maintained in compliance with established standards and industry practices.
- Design and re-engineer track components and systems to increase asset life and improve track system performance
- Conduct condition surveys, diagnose site conditions and provide root cause assessments.
- Perform technical design reviews of existing track and track components and external stakeholders’ submissions
- Support and interface with other disciplines to resolve track related issues.
- Taking professional responsibility for designs as required by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
- Work outside of normal hours, including afternoons and nights to respond and report on emergency inspection requests.
- Attend to track level whenever necessary and responsible to setup own work zones as per Surface Rule Book rules.
- Work with and occasionally directing and inspecting work of other technologists, engineers, staff and unionized workforce.
- Coordinate direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems.
- Resolve design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.
- Investigate and troubleshoot operating problems to determine cause and recommend alternate design, procedures, equipment or materials.
- Perform feasibility studies, surveys and assess the condition of existing systems and equipment, determining the extent of repair, safety of equipment and systems; perform random audits at sites to determine quality assurance and conformance to design.
- Demonstrates behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. Education and Experience
- Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanical or Civil Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (PEO) is mandatory.
- Directly related engineering experience in the track or roadway design field.
Additional Requirements
- Knowledge of mechanical and/or civil engineering principles, methods and practices
- Strong mathematical and analytical background with a thorough knowledge of mechanical design
- Strong ability and willingness to learn from other engineering disciplines including but not limited to Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, as applied to track
- Experience with preparing detailed design reviews, technical feasibility and constructability studies
- Proficiency in the use of common engineering software and databases; such as Bentley Microstation and SolidWorks 3D CAD
- Sound judgement, problem solving, organizational, communication, report writing (especially technical reports and specifications) and presentation skills
- Highly developed analytical skills in engineering design analysis and root cause failure assessments
- Knowledge of principles associated with design, analysis and maintenance of railways and roadways
- Must possess a valid non-probationary Province of Ontario class “G” driver’s license
- Knowledge of project management practices is an asset
