NAIT’s Powerline Technician Program is a provincially recognized apprenticeship program that offers comprehensive training in the functions and applications of powerline systems in Alberta. The program equips graduates with the skills needed for entry-level roles across various industry sectors, including the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems. Additional areas of focus include power generation, maintenance and commissioning, electrical machines, substation equipment, protection and control, and metering.

The PLT program is seeking candidates who are skilled in researching and developing high-level content, resources, and instructional materials for both classroom and online learning environments. Ideal candidates will be energetic leaders committed to student success and will possess exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct classroom/lab instruction while utilizing appropriate instructional strategies to maximize student motivation and learning in a skill-building environment.

  • Evaluate the learning process:  Ensure learning is evaluated in a reliable and timely manner, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students; Submit marks/records promptly.

  • Maintain professional and ethical relationships with students and colleagues.

  • Respond to student issues.

  • Utilize appropriate educational technology for presentations, communications and program promotion.


Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong technical knowledge in Powerline Technician and Power Systems Electrician fundamentals

  • Technical knowledge and experience in:

o    Overhead and underground line construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair

o    Powered mobile equipment

o    Auxiliary equipment for powerline and power system operation

o    Safety and Code standards required for the trade

o    Transformer and transformer bank construction, operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting

o    Electrical principles for single-phase and three-phase systems, generators, alternators, and motors

o    Metering theory, installation, and application

o    Protection and control for powerline and power systems

o    Substation construction, apparatus, design, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment

  • Bring passion, enthusiasm, and ideas that will positively contribute to the advancement and growth of the Powerline Technician program

  • Be willing to learn new skills required for curriculum and content development, including but not limited to: software required for course pack development, lab design, assessment creation, and mastering our learning management system (LMS): D2L by BrightSpace

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365, industry related software tools, and educational software are essential.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirements are a Journeyperson Powerline Technician Ticket with several years of related experience Preference will be made for individuals with Red Seal certification in the Powerline Trade. 

  • Experience as a Power Systems Electrician would be an asset.

  • Industry experience in design using relevant codes and software.

 

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Remuneration: Will commensurate with education and experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Instructor salary grid $65,218.00 - $113,452.00 annually. However, starting salary for new hires averages between $78,998.00 - $85,889.00 annually based on education and experience with room for negotiations. (Classification – Instructor).

This position is covered by the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) Collective Agreement
