Reporting to the Superintendent, Strategic Planning, the Chief Geologist leads the geosciences team within the Strategic Planning department and coordinates the efforts of their team with various departments on site depending on the needs of the business.
Responsibilities include leading or assisting with various aspects inside the group; coaching and mentoring team members, geoscience model development and improvement, operational geoscience support, geometallurgy, exploration, budget management and reserve reporting.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the successful candidate must have outstanding problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills and be a motivated self-starter, who can remain organized and prioritize contending demands in a fast-paced team environment.

Responsibilities:
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Safely deliver on drilling programs through effective contractor management and coordination with operations groups
- Interpretation of drilling data, structural mapping and geological features as related to ore body genesis and material properties such as hardness, material type, and densities
- Development and continuous improvement of geoscience models, including but not limited to: Cu/Mo grade models, bornite, oxides, clays/alteration, and integrating geoscience models with predictive production models such as throughput and recovery
- Communicate effectively with operating and technical groups and liaise with outside agencies to meet the operation’s overall objectives
- Explore and assess new technologies to support or improve geoscience activities at HVC that integrate with planning and operations and mitigate geoscience related risks
- Develop a medium and long-range strategic plan that incorporates all aspects of geoscience for Highland Valley Copper, including model development, production support, exploration drilling, Reserve and Resource reporting and land tenure
- Contribute to cost control by participating in annual budget preparation, monitoring and reconciliation
- Training, mentoring and coaching of employees to support career development goals
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in Geology or Geological Engineering or related.
- Membership or eligibility for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC is required
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in open pit or a closely related field with prior experience coordinating and supervising a geology team
- Excellent communication and people skills to ensure the successful implementation and management of geological projects
- Experience in Geostatistics, practical variography and Leapfrog is considered a strong
