Your Opportunity
The role of a Planning Designer is to work on projects of all sizes for both private and public sector clients. As a team member of a larger project under the guidance and supervision of a Senior Planning Designer, specializing in site plan design, and other designs required for development approvals in Ontario. You should be able to select, interpret and evaluate the appropriate Zoning By-law provisions to execute the design of a site for its highest and best use. You will perform a variety of tasks at different scales using Computer Aided Design (CAD) including executing drawings for neighbourhood development, subdivision design, and site planning. Additionally, you may, from time to time, assist the analysis of proposed projects.
Our existing projects include low, medium and high density residential, mixed use, retirement residence, institutional, industrial and utility development for both public and private sector clients. The applicant would be working among a team of planners, engineers, landscape architects, environmental and heritage specialists in a company of more than 25,000 employees.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Performs land use planning design using knowledge of relevant software programs.
- Works with other disciplines and professionals, including engineering, landscape architecture, geomatics, in the completion of the project under the direction of a senior planning designer or project manager.
- Reviews and interprets Zoning By-laws, Site Design Guidelines, and other urban or site/infrastructure design documentation with ease.
- Assists with the graphical preparation of development applications, planning reports, and presentations.
- Performs a variety of tasks which may include analyzing proposed project solutions to ensure design integrity, reliability, resource efficiently and cost effectiveness.
- Executes a foundational understanding of land use planning principles, concepts, and planning policy used to shape healthy, sustainable communities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the senior staff.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Basic understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of land use planning design.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Sounds understanding of design concepts, and knowledge of the engineering and site-specific influences to design, such as grading and servicing design, landscape design, and transportation.
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
- Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, building program and other similar material.
- Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Education and Experience
Technical degree/diploma/certificate in Urban, Rural or Regional Planning Technician or related field. Minimum of 1-3 years of experience.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
