Your Opportunity
The Business Center Practice Leader (BCPL) leads practice excellence including top-line performance and design and project delivery excellence. The BCPL is a leader that inspires our team, represents design, and reinforces the brand of Stantec while helping our clients, colleagues and communities thrive.
The BCPL reports to the Regional Growth Leader (RGL), is a partner to the BC Operations Leader (BCOL), and a member of the principal leadership team. The BCPL uses their strategic planning, market knowledge, and client relationships, in collaboration with the practice’s collective multidisciplinary teams, to purse and win work that transforms our communities and inspire our people.
The BCPL is a “seller/doer” responsible for leading the pursuit and delivery of excellent work to our clients. Accountable for the top line, the BCPL leads the growth of the Business Centers and Stantec’s market position while providing innovative design solutions with exceptional quality and execution that exceed client expectations. The BCPL will inspire, motivate, and hold teams accountable for business development, project delivery, and technical excellence—leading top line strategy while ensuring bottom line business performance.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead Business Development:
+ A visible leader of the BC and tasked with outreach to both the local community and other BC’s to lead the business development of the BC.
+ Actively contribute to win strategies and successful project execution through being hands-on in key pursuits, client management and project management.
+ Drive growth of the BC through leading the business development activities, key pursuits, and MB&D strategy.
+ Engage our Principal leaders, to expand our reach and client base using strong marketing, business development, account management plans.
+ Increase visibility of Stantec, to enhance our reputation and drive revenue, by sharing our knowledge and innovation story at key client engagements.
+ Partner with other BC and regional leadership to drive collaboration and growth initiatives across geographies and business lines.
+ Lead the annual marketing and business development (M&BD) plan for the BC.
+ Participate in the Go/No Go review process on new pursuits and help manage the marketing spend within the BC.
+ Achieve individual target MBD time of 25%.
- Be Client Focused and Engage with Projects:
+ Exceeding client expectations through strong client and account management and personally leading projects for major clients.
+ Drive client relationship strategy in partnership with the leadership team.
+ Oversee risk management of projects and pursuits, including review of contracts, fees, proposals on large pursuits, in partnership with our risk management team.
+ Achieve individual target utilization of 45%.
- Lead Practice Excellence:
+ Inspire, motivate, and hold the team accountable for the delivery of innovative design solutions.
+ Drive project excellence and champion design culture within all aspects of practice.
+ Leads or assigns responsibility for design excellence in all disciplines present in BC to foster innovation, sustainable design principles and use of technology.
+ Leads or assigns responsibility for management, needs assessment and provision of digital practice, tools and applications in support of BC to deliver work.
+ Leads or assigns responsibility to manage project delivery, QAQC, discipline excellence, technical expertise, documents quality and best practices in the execution of work.
+ Responsible for compliance with Project Delivery Office practices and Project Management (PM) Frameworks.
+ Provide broad leadership influence:
+ Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner and a source of counsel and advice for the BC.
+ Proactively identify opportunities to reinforce and further develop Stantec’s high performance culture with a focus on talent, quality, innovation, productivity, and business performance.
+ Represents the BC through public speaking engagements and attendance at industry and community events, meetings, and conferences.
+ Builds strong partnerships with business leaders in other BOUs within the region to foster cross-BOU collaboration client opportunities to diversify the client base, grow new expertise, increase work share opportunities, and drive organic revenue growth.
Support functions
- Provide People Leadership:
+ Support BCOL with developing, attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent.
+ Establish employee connectedness to leadership by interfacing frequently with employees.
+ Partner with BCOL by conducting BC-wide meetings to communicate the vision, business strategy and progress against applicable action plans.
+ Support the overall talent management lifecycle including career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development for the BC.
- Support Business Management:
+ Accountable for top line revenue growth, the BCPL also supports the BCOL in meeting established targets net revenue, gross margin, overhead, and operating income in the BC.
+ Monitor and manage the BCs sales performance and opportunity pipeline to ensure revenue targets are achieved.
+ Responsible for net revenue forecasts by period, quarter and year end.
+ Support BCOL with the annual budget for the BC, outlining the vision, focus, priorities for implementation, and setting specific goals for business performance.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Multidisciplinary experience in any or all markets.
- Demonstrated design acumen and leadership on major projects.
- Experience with responding to Requests for Proposals, Expression of Interests, Statement of Qualifications.
- Strong business development skills, including significant experience developing new clients, building and maintaining productive relationships with a client base.
- Strong seller-doer capable of generating work and creating long-term relationships and delivering long-term value to clients for Stantec.
- An entrepreneurial orientation with strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting-services provider.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, organization, coordination, leadership, team-building and managerial skills.
- Knowledge of market assessment techniques, insights, and contacts.
Education and Experience
- Professional Degree and registration preferred in your field of practice, as applicable
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in business development, account management and project management experience in a multi-disciplinary practice.
