General Accountability
Provides technical support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of TTC's systems and equipment for the department; assists with the preparation of estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings; conducts engineering analyses, evaluations, tests and draws conclusions; conducts investigations into electrical, signaling or track problems; and detects new areas needing engineering attention to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.
Key Job Functions
- Layout/prepare designs and drawings for various projects; check the quality of production by Design Draftspersons in accordance with TTC design standards and various codes, Engineers' notes, rough sketches, verbal instructions and own design concepts.
- Review and interpret existing conditions, drawings, specifications, and material submissions; obtain additional data necessary for the completion of accurate drawings and specifications, and conformity with TTC specifications.
- Initiate and research Design Standards; research information to ensure final designs are practical and meet code requirements and design standards; conduct studies and research reference drawings for structural details.
- Monitoring draftspersons’ progress in the completion of related drawings, reviewing for accuracy, and ensuring consistency with appropriate numbering, filing, storage and backup systems.
- Preparing detailed cost and quantity estimates, cost comparisons and feasibility analyses for track related projects.
- Designing complex track and trackwork layouts for streetcar and surface track systems in accordance with TTC design, maintenance and applicable industry standards.
- Developing preliminary and final CAD drawings of streetcar trackwork including grade, alignment, special trackwork components, layouts and accessories using established design principles and practices.
- Determining existing field conditions, reviewing total station survey data, existing drawings and specifications as necessary to obtain information required for design.
- Assisting senior design engineering staff in reviewing tenders, designs, etc.
- Completing mathematical calculations for design of trackwork components, layouts, horizontal and vertical curves.
- Provide direction and guidance to operational maintenance personnel, supervisory staff, students or on-site contract employees regarding existing equipment, new installations or inspection work.
- Troubleshoot and investigate operational problems and defect analyses and evaluate and provide engineered solutions for new and/or existing systems; investigate the effectiveness of changes in procedures, designs, or materials.
- Administer the construction, inspection, testing and commissioning of new, existing and proposed section specific systems.
- Assemble, prepare and/or review various reports, staff summary sheets, project status and progress reports, documentation on inspection visits, and other correspondence related to the work.
- Participation in the TTC's Customer Service Ambassador Program.

Education and Experience
- Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanical or Civil Engineering Technology) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Certification as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) is considered an asset.
- Directly related experience in the track or roadway design field.
Additional Requirements
- Requires sound knowledge of permanent way design encompassing streetcar, subway and other rapid transit track work, as well as survey techniques, construction procedures and mechanical design.
- Must be proficient in the gathering and preparation of data and have sound knowledge of drafting procedures and standards with the ability to assess alternative track alignments, and prepare detailed and complex drawings.
- Must possess good organizational and planning skills, along with well-developed mathematical and effective oral and written communications skills.
- Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer and computerized applications related to the work including computer aided drawing (CAD), Intergraph (MicroStation), SolidWorks and AutoCAD drafting and design.
- Must have or must develop a knowledge of TTC and departmental policies and procedures applicable to the work performed including the TTC’s process for generating, back-up and electronic storage of drawings.
