Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Supervisor, the successful candidate will ensure a high standard of animal husbandry, including cleaning, feeding, and medicating as well as assessment and enrichment
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure a high standard of cleaning of indoor kennels and outdoor runs, cages, floors, feed bowls, euthanasia chambers, etc., utilizing hoses, brushes, shovels, and potentially hazardous chemicals.
- Perform full cycle care to animals in the shelter (wild and domestic) including feeding, administering medication; monitoring, recording, and reporting any health and/or behavioral concerns of the animals as directed and under the supervision of the Supervisor, Shelter Administration
- Laisse with veterinarians to ensure accurate care of animals as required
- Confirm breed, color, sex, distinguishing marks and sources of identification including tags, tattoos and scanning for microchips when placing kennel cards on cages
- Quarantine and observe suspected rabid animals or other disease carriers
- Perform / assist euthanasia on domestic and wild animals using as required
- Set up new animals upon intake, with required intake sheet and observation record form – maintain supply
- Assist Registered Veterinary Technician with animal medical concerns
- Communicate effectively with all staff verbal / written regarding updates on animals, supply orders or other relevant duties that will affect their work
- Follow all Health and Safety and City policies
- Participate in staff training programs
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Animal Care Certificate or related education is required
- Minimum 2 – 3 years animal care experience or a combination of related education and experience is required
- Animal shelter experience is preferred but not required
- Animal enrichment experience is preferred but not required
- Must be able to work 10 hour shifts, working a varied shift schedule which includes days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including lifting up to a maximum of 50lbs. bending, and working in an environment with a high stress environment (noise, environmental conditions)
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in a concise and professional manner is required.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- A self-starter with a passion for pets who excels in a collaborative team environment
- It will be necessary for the successful candidate to receive an anti-rabies vaccination or to provide a recent rabies titer check
- This position is part of the bargaining unit
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including lifting, bending, twisting, and working in adverse weather conditions
Hourly Rate/Salary: 20.26 - 22.21
Hours of Work: Minimum of 20 hours per week
