Team Overview
EDC is seeking an investment professional to join its Mid-Market Growth Business’s (MMGB) Growth Capital Team (GCT). MMGB is developing deeper, partnership-like relationships with a focused group of promising Canadian medium-sized companies, gaining intimate understanding of their strategies and long-term plans and, in turn, developing customized financial and non-financial solutions to help these companies achieve their strategic objectives and accelerate their long-term growth plans. The success of MMGB and EDC’s Medium Segment Strategy is measured by the growth and success of the Canadian companies benefiting from our comprehensive solutions delivery approach.
Job Overview
The GCT is responsible for originating and managing MMGB’s $400 million equity and debt portfolio. The Investments/ Senior Investments Manger will collaboratively work with MMGB team members to become a trusted partner to Canadian medium-sized companies and gain an intimate understanding of their strategies, growth plans, inflection points, pain points and needs. Using this knowledge, the Investments/ Senior Investments Manager will work in an Agile environment, on a dedicated solutions team, to structure and deliver tailored financial and non-financial solutions, leveraging the full suite of EDC’s products and services. Financial solutions most frequently comprise of venture debt, venture capital and/or growth equity. MMGB has the flexibility to provide capital support independently or in partnership with other investors/lenders under commercial terms, conditions and returns expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Partner - Co-develops strategic customer relationships and investment opportunities with the objective of being recognized by our portfolio companies as a trusted partner.
- Conduct Due Diligence - Works with a deal team to conduct full business analysis and diligence for complex direct venture capital or venture debt transactions.
- Build Financial Models - Working with junior colleagues, able to lead detailed excel based financial modeling for risk assessment, structuring and valuation purposes.
- Present to Investment Committee – Responsible for the preparation of investment memorandums and related materials and presenting to EDC’s Investment Committee.
- Negotiate Legal Documentation - Working with internal and/or external counsel, reviews, assesses, negotiates and finalizes transaction documentation.
- Manage a Portfolio – Manages a focused investment portfolio. Performs ongoing assessment and valuation of individual investments. Works comfortably with senior management of portfolio investments to provide or coordinate value added support to their growth strategies.
- Demonstrate Teamwork - Works collaboratively and effectively with the broader MMGB Customer Delivery Team and all internal and external stakeholders including legal, accounting, lenders and co-investors.
- Provide Coaching and Mentorship - Leverages experience to provide learning, development, and mentorship to junior colleagues.
- Collaborates - Is a thought leader and contributes to MMGB’s strategies and go-to-market support initiatives.
Screening Criteria
- 5 (Investments Manager) to 7 (Senior Investments Manager) years of direct and relevant work experience in private equity, venture capital investing, and/or venture debt with a demonstrated track record of leading transactions and managing a portfolio of investments or venture debt.
- Additional relevant professional experience which could include M&A, banking, accounting, consulting or operations.
- Referenceable deal sheet or listing of relevant private equity, venture capital, or venture debt transactions that the candidate had direct (individual or shared) involvement in.
Skills & Knowledge
- Solid understanding of finance and accounting enabling effective financial analysis.
- Strong communication, collaboration and teamwork skills.
- Good business acumen coupled with excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to understand complex legal contracts.
- Solid organizational skills to effectively manage transaction and internal processes.
- Ability to represent EDC with company founders, senior executives, general partners and other investors in the Canadian venture capital ecosystem.
Assets
- Private equity or venture capital fund investing or portfolio management experience.
- Experience with private company boards and governance.
- Operational experience in a private equity or venture backed company.
- Bilingualism in both official languages (English and French).

Compensation Details:
- Investments 20: Salaries typically range from $124,273 to $207,120 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive
- Investments 21: Salaries typically range from $144, 156 to $240, 260 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive
Location
- Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
- This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from any EDC community hub Toronto, or Montreal
