Embedded within Canadian Tire’s Brand and Customer department, the Consultant, ESG Strategy and Climate will support the development and rollout of Canadian Tire’s climate strategies across our family of companies through the creation, execution and monitoring of programs that instill shared value for the organization. The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of decarbonization strategies, carbon accounting, renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
What you’ll do
Support the development and execution of key levers in our decarbonization strategy, including building and transportation decarbonization, renewable energy and more. This will include research, data analysis, building and maintenance of financial and decarbonization models, cross functional collaboration and executive communications
Support the planning, execution, management, and monitoring of cross-functional sustainability initiatives to further the ESG team’s other environmental sustainability strategies
Collaborate with key stakeholders such as real estate, transportation, finance, legal, store operations, supply chain, merchandising, product stewardship, marketing and product development to integrate the company’s sustainability strategies into our core business
Capture and create innovative opportunities for value including better processes, products, and services; develop business cases and conduct analysis on potential climate change initiatives evaluating against prescribed criteria and metrics
Provide support to the leadership team as required, including research, consultative initiatives, board reporting, presentation support, etc.
Research emerging trends, best practices, and opportunities in the field of sustainability – with an emphasis on climate change - with the goal of driving shared value in the organization
Support the team as a subject matter expert for climate change related inquiries and opportunities within the corporation
What you bring
2 to 4 years of work experience in energy, climate change and/or sustainability. Experience in the retail industry is an asset
Data and analysis skills; the candidate will be required to support in data gathering, analysis and modelling; experience and/or a natural affinity for these areas is an asset
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, especially in terms of synthesizing and communicating complex topics
Strong knowledge of decarbonization strategies, carbon accounting, renewable energy and sustainable technologies
An educational background in engineering, environmental science, accounting, sustainability, or related field is also an asset. A Master’s degree in any of the listed fields is also an asset
Experience in driving decarbonization initiatives in a commercial or retail setting is an asset
A passion for environmental sustainability and an understanding of how sustainability, climate change, corporate social responsibility, and environmental issues impact business and/or the retail sector
Innovative thinking and natural curiosity; the candidate should be a motivated self-starter able to champion innovative solutions and work independently in a complex and deadline-driven environment
Demonstrated project management competencies; develops, executes and/or achieves initiative action plans, timelines, business case analysis, and business alignment
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, prioritize deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
Excellent relationship management skills; experience building and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and working effectively with teams in a matrix environment
An ability to act as a liaison across business units/cross-functional teams to gather and synthesize information and develop recommendations
Demonstrated expertise in creating, planning, and implementing initiatives and a structured logical approach to problem-solving; can understand the context and impact of problems, risks, opportunities, and value creation
Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, particularly PowerPoint and Excel, with the ability to manage large datasets in Excel
