JOB SUMMARY
As an Apprentice Station Electrician, you will participate in a recognized program to learn the Station Electrician trade and become a certified Station Electrician at Hydro Ottawa. During this time you will work in an energized high voltage electrical environment up to and including 230KV as you complete the necessary courses to qualify as a Journeyperson.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Stations, the Apprentice Station Electrician is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical and mechanical apparatus and structures in Hydro Ottawa substations and vaults. The Apprentice Station Electrician is also responsible for working on construction of new stations, and additions and modifications to existing plant; troubleshooting and repairing a diverse variety of electric power distribution apparatus, protection and control devices, electronic equipment, and wiring.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential responsibilities of a certified Station Electrician include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:
Install, test, commission, and maintain medium and high voltage equipment (4kV to 230kV) of a variety and complexity found in substations including, but not limited to, various types and configurations of: power transformers, distribution transformers, current transformers, potential transformers, tap changers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, switches, bus way, cable systems, automated distribution switches, reclosures and hydroelectric generation stations.
Install, commission, maintain and test low voltage AC and DC systems including, but not limited to, various types of protection and control relaying, electromechanical relays, microprocessors, AC and DC distribution panels and associated circuitry, disconnect switches, current transformers, UPS battery banks and chargers, transfer switches and SCADA systems.
Install communications systems for data acquisition including, but not limited to, antennas, radios, coaxial cable and fibre optic cable.
Conduct inspections for quality control and equipment monitoring, including IR scans, oil testing and dissolved gas analysis, report findings and recommendations to engineering staff for scheduling efficiency for requisite maintenance.
Test, analyze and communicate condition of hazardous insulating materials such as PCBs present in oil and purity or contamination of SF6 gas.
Respond to emergency systems conditions, perform diagnosis troubleshooting and repair of faulty equipment where possible to ensure the safe operation and restoration of power to customers.
Inspection and safe operation of numerous vehicle types including, but not limited to, step vans, cube vans, service trucks, pickup trucks, radial boom derricks, trailers, aerial devices, forklifts and elevated work platforms.
Perform switching for substation maintenance, load distribution and construction activities, while maintaining safe limits of approach, and wearing the mandatory 40CAL arc flash suit due to elevated fault current in substation environments.
Monitor, oversee and ensure the safety and productivity of a wide variety of internal/external trades and contractors to support ongoing construction and maintenance activities.
Maintain and manage project compliance with all internal and external safety standards and documentation, Utility Work Protection Code, Ontario Reg 22/04, Hydro Ottawa Limited Construction Verification Program, Ontario Electrical Safety Code and Ministry of Labour Notice of Projects.
Train apprentices as required
Source, budget, and purchase stock and non-stock materials and equipment for maintenance and construction projects.
Perform other related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma
2 year Community College Diploma in Electrical/Electronics or Construction and Maintenance Electrician certified by the Ontario College of Trades
Above average mechanical aptitude, reading and mathematical abilities
Computer software training will be considered an asset
Have the knowledge and ability to gain, hold and maintain, at a minimum, the following certifications:
Forklift certification
RBD certification
Propane certification
CPR/First Aid certification
Utility Work Protection Code
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
English essential, both oral and written
Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset
Valid Driver’s License - Class G
Ability to obtain DZ Drivers Licence
Government of Canada Security Clearance
Selected candidates will require an above average score on a standardized mechanical, mathematical and reading comprehension assessment as an element of the selection process.
The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.
