What is the opportunity?

RBC is pleased to introduce an exciting academic placement for the Fall 2018 academic semester within the Office of the CEO.  The RBC Externship provides an opportunity to showcase your global strategy, research, policy knowledge and writing skills to produce insightful research to support RBC’s strategic priorities.  The research will support RBC’s ongoing dialogue with policy makers and communities on topics that matter to Canada’s future.

What will you do?

  • Provide dedicated, value-added research on topics that range from financial, economic to political, social and environmental matters
  • Leverage existing research networks both internal and external including published works, blogs, newsfeeds, media outlets, government research, policy review and RBC expertise to identify and evaluate trends in today’s fast changing society on a global scale that have potential impact on business and society, locally, as well as internationally
  • Synthesize research, fact check and write clear and paper research documents in support of both John Stackhouse, SVP, Office of the CEO and Craig Wright, SVP and Chief Economist, RBC
  • Specifically, the assignment will produce published white papers on key topics of interest for RBC which may include the innovation economy, the impact of technology on Canada’s economic future or the labour market of tomorrow.

  • Access to senior leadership at RBC responsible for gathering and interpreting global economic, business, political and social trends 

What do you need to succeed?


  • Previous research, editing, writing and content delivery in financial, economic and public policy sector experience
  • Solid policy orientation, analytical thinking skills and influencing strategies
  • Strong journalistic-type research skills from all sources required including digital, published works, media outlets and interviewing skills
  • Impeccable research, writing and editing; fact checking skills and experience
  • High degree of organization and multi-tasking ability; project management skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with keen attention to detail 


  • Policy experience, strong financial and economic research experience preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience in international migration and economic growth, diversity or environmental related themes


  • Well-read, curious, academic and visionary mind-set
  • Impeccable attention to detail and publication accuracy
  • Digital expertise
