Position: Associate Assignment Editor, CTV News Toronto

Location: Agincourt

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Overtime as required.

Be part of driving Canada’s number one local newsroom into the future! CTV Toronto is looking for an Associate Assignment Editor with an appreciation for how today’s audiences consume quality content on multiple platforms. The successful candidate wants to work in a fast-paced, innovative newsroom that delivers content using the latest technology at the speed of today’s news consumer.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate and pitch story ideas for news coverage as well as original stories, with an eye for execution across multiple platforms
  • Monitor emergency scanners, social media, internal and external email, and other sources of information, in order to identify news stories
  • Coordinate assignments and news teams for news coverage
  • Assign news teams for coverage across multiple platforms
  • Anticipate coverage needs, set up news stories, identify gaps, and pro-actively suggest solutions
  • Research and confirm information
  • Identify original angles and look for leads to advance coverage
  • Build and maintain a wide variety of news contacts
  • Book story ideas for coverage and chase produce for coverage, set up interviews, pre-interview, conduct interviews
  • Ability to write engaging news stories for traditional on-air broadcast and digital
  • Provide backfill for other newsroom and newsroom-related positions, including the news library and Assignment Editor position as required
  • Answer phone calls and complete various other editorial and newsroom tasks
  • Provide support for field teams and newsroom editorial teams
  • Ensure accreditation for major news events and assist with coverage logistics and planning
  • Participate in news editorial meetings

Qualifications:

  • A forward-looking innovative approach toward the news industry and modern news gathering techniques
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years newsroom experience
  • Evidence of being a “consumer of news”
  • Journalism or multi-media degree or diploma
  • Demonstrated experience reporting or producing news stories would be an asset
  • Highly organized
  • Excellent command of the English language in spoken and written communication
  • An understanding of Toronto and its surrounding municipalities and politics on all levels of government
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities simultaneously on deadline and come up with a successful strategy to execute the plan
  • Excellent computer, social media, internet search and multimedia skills

Bilingualism is an asset (English and French); adequate knowledge of French is required for positions in Quebec.
